“SPF interferes with camera flash and makes you look washed-out in photos,” says Stacey Lyn. (Not to mention, your face and chest will be two different colors.) This rule also applies to mineral makeups (which don’t have great staying power, either). Instead, look for high-def foundations and powders. “High-def products are meant for photography and don’t contain SPF,” says Carissa. “They’re also lightweight, but contain skin-flattering pigments, so they pack a powerful punch when it comes to covering up imperfections without being noticeable in photos.”
And if you’re having an outdoor wedding and need to wear SPF? “Apply a moisturizer with SPF 15 an hour before putting onmakeup,” says makeup artist Cicelee Padilla.

WHO: Eve Pearl

WHAT: Five Time Emmy-Award Winning Celebrity Makeup Artist, Author of “Plastic Surgery without the Surgery,” Founder and President of EVE PEARL®.

WHEN: 2007

WHERE: New York, NY

HOW: You wouldn’t know it from the Emmy Awards lining the credenza in her Manhattan studio & boutique, but Eve Pearl doesn’t come from the country’s most impressive beauty school or institute of cosmetology. Rather, Eve’s background is Wall Street, where she spent years working after studying business at Baruch College. So how did Eve’s ability to do beautiful makeup develop? That may actually be genetic. Decades earlier, before her family came to the United States, they immigrated from Soviet Georgia and then Israel. Eve spent days at the heels of her mother who did hair and make-up for the Opera and Ballet at Lincoln Center. It was during that time that Eve realized her true passion for makeup and launched her own career as a celebrity makeup artist. Quickly, Eve established herself as a leading artist in the industry, where she showcased her talents on Broadway, the New York City Opera, American Ballet Theatre, ABC’s “The View,” and most recently, NBC’s “The Today Show”, where she serves as the on-air beauty expert, as well as Meredith Vieira’s personal make-up artist.

As Eve established a reputation for being a celebrity makeup artist, she struck upon an idea. “I felt that when I would do a makeover, a woman felt great that one day. If I could teach them to do their own makeovers, they could feel great every day,” she says. So she wrote a book, “Plastic Surgery without the Surgery”, a comprehensive manual designed to help women replicate her techniques. “However, after the book, women kept asking me where to find the products and items I was talking about.”

With the combination of business savvy and a fine eye, Pearl answered the call by starting her own luxury brand of makeup — EVE PEARL Cosmetics — right in her own two-bedroom apartment. She financed the start-up by selling her stock portfolio and taking out a small business loan for $25,000. Sales primarily took place on her website, EvePearl.com, where helpful make-up tutorials have garnered a following. Today, in addition to being an author and launching her own line of makeup, she has her own Makeup Studio and Boutique in the heart of New York City. She also distributes her makeup line through other boutiques where professionals are trained to do make-up using the EVE PEARL method. The day I visited Eve in her studio, she had just taken possession of inventory worth seven figures.

The key to it all? Eve has found that keeping a close eye on the books — something she learned to do in school — and not quitting her day job have been instrumental to her success. “I’ve always had two jobs,” she laughs. “Sometimes more.” Why? As a single mother and the children of immigrants, she knows that working harder than other people is absolutely essential if you want to break out, particularly in this economy. She also knows that you have to trust yourself enough to go with your instincts. “Everyone has a great idea,” she says. “But you actually have to do the hard work in order to succeed.”

HER ADVICE: “Find something that you love to do and find a way to contribute and give back. That is the winning formula. When you can emotionally affect someone’s life, that is the core to a building a brand,” says Pearl.

History and research has shownthat when the economy goes into a recession or a depression, the sale oflipstick increases. "The Lipstick Effect"... A term coined after theGreat Depression, which saw sales of cosmetics rise in the four years from 1929to 1933.

As the theory goes, glum consumers continue to spend money on small luxuries during times of economic or emotional stress to buy their spirits, a point underscored in the months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States, which saw lipstick sales double.

It seems difficult for women to justify spending their hard earned money on the latest Louis Vuitton handbag or those Christian Louboutin pair of heels. At least they can still splurge on themselves with a small item like cosmetics or lipstick...to look good and hopefully feel better about themselves...

Humm...using the luxury of cosmetics to lift our spirits and feel pretty...well, that might have been the case in the Great Depression.... Ladies, times have changed...the current depression puts higher demands on everything...including our cosmetics.

Faced with news of increasing layoffs, straining economic pressure and the fact that competition out there is much greater than ever before...in all facets of life...we need to step it up.Let's face it; no one really knows when the next ball will drop. Everyone seems to be competing to get that client, keep that job or end up being one of the hundreds trying to get that one available new job. How do you get noticed, being one from so many...how can the fact that you have years of experience, knowledge and the ability to get the job done, not be overshadowed by the dark under eye circles you have from not sleeping. How can all the years you've put into your field be recognized as an asset when your self conscious about your uneven skin, rosacea or that nasty breakout? It does sound a bit silly, but is it? First impressions DO matter. Your appearance is a good investment even when times are very tough. People, who take care of themselves daily, seem to be able to get ahead of those who don't. Think about the time you spend getting your resume coiffed. The time you spend in finding the appropriate suite, all the hours spent hunting on search engines looking for jobs...

Time can give you the professional knowledge. But time can also take away the youthful sparkle of your appearance if you let it. When you look good, you feel confident. That gives you a Competitive Edge and something your colleagues and clients will certainly recognize, appreciate and come to expect.

The Lipstick Effect of2009...cosmetics to help us feel pretty is not enough. Find multi function products that will treat your skin; to make you look good, feel good and that are good for you. Learn how to apply it properly for your field of business...and walk into a room confident that you have done everything to best represent yourself...with a Visual Competitive Edge!

With the launch of an already best-selling book "Going Rogue",
Sarah Palin is on a full-time media/campaign blitz. She first appeared with
Oprah and then Barbara Walters. I am certain there's a long list of additional
appearances to follow. Personally, I keep waiting for Tina Fey to appear and do
an SNL skit.

With Sarah Palin mania upon us, we can be assured that just about every
news, cable, internet and magazine show will be replaying snippets of Sarah
Palin interviews past and present. As a makeup artist who primarily works on
high profile women in media, naturally one of the things that fascinates me
most about Sarah Palin is her makeup. Recently there's been a lot of buzz
surrounding 1) How much Sarah Palin's makeup artist is compensated and 2) Sarah
Palin's actual makeup look.

To the first point, Sarah Palin's makeup artist is rumored to have made over
$22,000 in a two week span. My initial reaction to the makeup artist's five
figure paycheck is "You go girl!". God bless any professional member
of my artist community who swings a gig that sweet...several of my associates
would like to assist!

As for Sarah Palin's actual makeup look, never have I seen such scrutiny and
upheaval over a past, present or future vice presidential or presidential
candidate's makeup. The closest comparison that comes to mind is the obsession
the media once had with Hillary Clinton's pant suits. Poor Hillary was
relentlessly grilled for her petite proportioned pants!

I'd like to go on the record stating that I think Sarah Palin is a beautiful
woman (and I don't mean for her age...for any age). In preparing to write this
article I reached out to some of my industry buddies for their take on Sarah
Palin's makeup. Most of their comments fell into the following themes:

• Makeup seems a bit dated, i.e. heavy-handed blush application à la 80's
contouring.

• Eye liner appears a tad too thick and reminiscent of the 60's.

• Face looks quite smooth, but neck seems a bit ruddy (Note to those on TV
or photo shoots: When smoothing out your client's face, always match the
neck/chest/décolletage area).

• General "airline attendant" look. The implication here is that
the look is stiff and cookie cutter with no variation.

The comments go on and on but you basically get the gist. Most individuals
in the public arena go through an image evolution. I'm certain if you take
anyone in the public eye and turn back time several years, you will see many
changes.

Let's face it, who are we kidding? Everyone tries their best to use their
personal appearance and body language to represent the message they are trying
to convey. What do you think Condoleezza Rice's red lipstick and flipped hair
are saying? How about Hillary Clinton's short coiffe and no-nonsense pant
suits? What do you think Nancy Pelosi's lack of facial movement is trying to
convey? Or even Olympia Snowe's black hair coloring and hair pinned up without
much else? Don't get me started...

Personally, I like Sarah Palin's smooth skin, natural-looking glossy lips,
glasses, and overall makeup. And the blush, well OK, the blush can be toned
down a bit and and moved a smidge higher to diffuse the obvious contouring
effect. But overall, if you're going to look for things to not like about the
lady, find something other than her rouge and eye liner. You're simply barking
up the wrong cosmetics counter. As a mother of five in her mid-40's, from where
I sit Mrs. Sarah Palin is looking pretty darn good!

Eve Pearl Demonstrates Fall Trends and Celebrity Looks

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1>
New York — August 26th 2009 — On August 24th, Five-time Emmy award-winning celebrity makeup artist Eve Pearl showcased her “Fall Trends & Tips from a Pro” on WNBC’s “Today in

New York”, hosted by Megan Meany, in a segment to be aired on a future date. Eve focused on the top makeup trends for fall and demonstrated the most sought after makeup looks of today’s hottest celebrities - Megan Fox, Rihanna and Scarlett Johansen.

Look no further than the red carpet when you want to know the top trends in makeup. Celebrities are always sporting the latest trends and this fall is no different. From bold red lips, to smokey eyes, to defined brows, Eve shows you how to get these most coveted make-up looks, along with sharing her professional tips to ensure you are ready for the fall in no time!

Eve applied makeup to three models. She demonstrated three of the fall’s top trends — bold red lips, dramatic black-lined eyes and defined brows - and educated viewers on her professional Eve Pearl methods.

Scarlet Johansson can always be seen with picture-perfect bold, red lips. To demonstrate this look, Eve lined the modelÂ’s lips with a caramel/brownish pencil and then filled in the entire lip area with the same pencil. She then finished off the look with a bold red lipstick, focusing most of the color in the center of the mouth and spreading outwards to avoid any harsh edges.

“The pencil prevents the red tones from turning pink,” explains

Pearl. “You can also add a hint of gloss on top of the bold red for a more kissable look.”

Added

Pearl, “If your bold red color ends up too bold, you can apply a bronzy-toned gloss to calm down the color. This works on light and dark skin.”

Eve also demonstrated the sought-after dramatic black-lined eyes most worn by Megan Fox and Rihanna. By using a black liquid eye liner on the top lash line, Eve created a bold, precise line. She then sloped the line upwards and slightly extended it beyond the outer corner of the eye to create a winged look.

“When doing dramatic liquid liner on the top lash line, it’s best to skip liner on the lower lash line,” said

Pearl. “Mascara is sufficient on the lower lash line. This allows for all of the focus to be on your top liner making it super dramatic.”

Lastly, Eve demonstrated the hot trend of defined brows on WNBCÂ’s very own Megan Meany. Using an angled brush, Eve colored in MeganÂ’s brows and traced powder along the bottom of her lashes to add definition.

“Intense bold brows are back,” explained

Pearl. “Defined brows can take an ordinary make-up look and transform it into a super polished look.”

Eve Pearl's Makeup 101 Segment Focuses on Summertime Cheeks, Bronzers & Sun Protection

New York - July 20th 2009 - Five-time Emmy award-winning celebrity makeup artist Eve Pearl delivered her latest Makeup 101 segment on NBC's TODAY Show, focusing on "a sun kissed glow without the skin damage."

Eve applied makeup to three models and demonstrated to viewers her distinct Eve Pearl® High Definition techniques.

According to Pearl, it is a good idea to start with a tinted moisturizer that doubles as an anti-aging skin treatment while offering protection from the sun. Then, adding a dual blush and bronzer will give you the perfect tan look.

Large, thick brushes do not alloy for maximum control, so Eve recommends using a fan brush to apply blush/bronzer in order to create a better effect. Lightly dust it across the blusher/bronzer and then gently glide it across your cheeks. Make sure to stay on top of the apples of your cheeks. You may even go above that area right under the eyes. This brush allows for complete control of placement.
When dealing with, hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration or sun spots) more cover-up and protection, is needed to make the skin look smooth and flawless. It is important to start by applying a foundation with natural sun protection that also gives a smooth finish. Ideally, you should use a dual-toned high-definition foundation that will reactivate with water and double as a concealer. This will ensure long-lasting wear through the summer. It's important to use multifunctional products that are good for your skin.

One of Eve's tricks is using the blush/bronzer as a setting powder to set your foundation and give you a natural healthy glow.
People with a fair complexion are also able to achieve that healthy sun-kissed glow.

Start out by applying an anti-aging tinted moisturizer, and then add an extra layer of moisturizing foundation. A damp sponge allows the foundation to go on sheer. Then, a mixture of blush colors consisting of pink, peach and bronzer can be added to the cheeks.
"The best part of the TODAY Show segment is being able to repeat my techniques, while showing the variation between a variety of skin colors and a variety of ages and face shapes," said Pearl.

“The Naimies staff is very passionate about makeup,” said Eve. “It was very exciting to teach new techniques to professionals who might have seen it all. It’s great knowing you can always grow in your approach and your method.”

Although EveÂ’s makeup line may be smaller compared to others, she feels that her line provides only the essential products that can be used on all skin tones.

“It is extremely important to explain my methods to the Naimies’ makeup artists so the makeup can be used correctly for maximum results,” said Eve.

Eve Pearl's Makeup 101 Segment Focuses on Eye Makeup

New York - June 5th2009 — Five-time Emmy award-winning celebrity makeup artist Eve Pearl delivered her Makeup 101 segment on NBC's TODAY show, focusing on "The Eyes".

Eve applied eye makeup to three models and educated viewers on her distinct Eve Pearl® High Definition techniques.

It is important to start with foundation on your eyelid, which holds the makeup together all day long. Then, the eyeliner can be applied.

"The biggest misconception everyone has is [about] eyeliner," said Pearl. "The one thing you are not supposed to do is use it as a pencil. You want to hold it parallel to your lashes."

Eve also explained smoking out the eye lids, which allows for the illusion of drawing a perfect line. Creating a straight line with eyeliner is very difficult, even for professional makeup artists, but smudging it with eye shadow can hide those errors.

"You don't have to be precise to look good," said Pearl. "If you do your eye makeup first, you can then clean up any shadows that fall on your face with your moisturizer before continuing with your foundation and concealer.

For older women, Eve explained that shimmer was good as opposed to glitter.

"When we get older, we want to achieve a bit more of a dewy look, which light illuminators and shimmer can help with, but not too much," said Pearl.

Eve's central message explained that the makeup techniques never change, only the color of the shadows and intensity. So you can go from simple to dramatic by using more jewel tones rather than natural earth tones.

Makeup 101 has many great take away values. Women are able to see the process several times over, for a specific area of the face. This allows for much better retention and visuals confirming the method works on different skin tones, face structures and ages. Eve's Plastic Surgery without the Surgery Makeovers are also highly rated with the cosmetic alternatives to plastic surgery.

On April 21st 2009, Eve made her Makeup 101 debut, giving foundation and concealer tips.

From June 13th to June 15th Eve will be appearing at the International Beauty Show at the Las Vegas Convention. On June 20th and 21st, Eve will be appearing at the IMATS Beauty Show in Pasadena, California.

The EVE PEARL Makeup Experience Studio and Boutique is located at 805 Third Avenue in the heart of New York City.
