Chester Higgins Jr./The New York Times Eve Pearl
By: John Grossman
Last week, we published a case study about Eve Pearl, an Emmy-winning TV makeup artist who founded a cosmetics company by the same name. In June 2011, with online sales and traffic at her three-year-old Manhattan boutique slower than desired, Ms. Pearl, 46, listened hard when ShopNBC, the nation’s third-largest 24-hour home shopping network, invited her to appear live with some of her high-end products.
She weighed the pluses: her experience in front of the cameras on several “Today” show product demos and a potential audience of tens of millions. And she considered the negatives, among them: a possible worsening of cash flow because of the shopping network’s payment terms and the fear of tarnishing her top-drawer brand in the hurly burly of home shopping TV.
Last October, Ms. Pearl stepped in front of the ShopNBC cameras,
first at midnight, then again at 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. She returned to the
networks’ Minnesota studios the following month and has reappeared every
month or so, as recently as last weekend. The exposure has had direct
and indirect benefits. Ms. Pearl estimates home shopping sales will
reach seven figures this year – and represent about a third of her total
revenue. And rather than losing any luster because of this added sales
venue, she feels her brand is sparkling even more. “Traffic both in the
store and on our Web site spikes every time I’m on air – about 30
percent,” she said.

THE CHALLENGE With sales growth slower than desired, Eve Pearl, the founder, is considering pitching her high-end cosmetic products – priced well above department store levels – to a broad audience by appearing on ShopNBC, a 24-hour TV shopping channel in the mode of QVC.
THE BACKGROUND While working on “The View,” Ms. Pearl started selling her brush-on products from her New York apartment. By 2008, she had become Ms. Vieira’s personal makeup specialist. She followed the broadcaster backstage on the sets of “Today” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” appeared on “Today” herself, and basked in the glow of a ribbon-cutting. She was flanked by morning show stars – Ms. Vieira, Ann Curry, Hoda Kotb and Natalie Morales – at the grand opening of her stylish 700-square-foot Upper East Side boutique. To read more about this follow this link:
I often get asked about problem dark circles underneath the eyes and how to camouflage them best. I find that although drinking plenty of water and regularly using a good eye brightening cream, eye Slices etc can help, this issue can often be genetic so some of my Clients are looking for more of a quick fix, particularly my Bridal Clients who want to look their very best for their big day.
With dark undereye circles, the best concealers are the creamy light
formulations that don’t crease easily and dry out the area, sinking into
fine lines and making the problem worse. Also you need a colour
correcting concealer with a peachy/pinky tone to counteract the
bluish/purplish colour of the dark circles.

No amount of makeup can mask an ugly heart.”- Kevyn Aucion
The above statement will always ring true when dealing with our inner being vs. our outer appearance. There is no amount of makeup that will ever allow a person to “be more beautiful”. What makeup should do is help enhance what was naturally given to us. Better yet, makeup is now helping us enhance our skin’s beauty and overall health.
The best thing we can do is educate ourselves about beauty (inner and outer). By keeping ourselves educated we can follow new trends and new technology. Wait, technology, what does that have to do with cosmetics? If you think about it, when was the last time you changed out your cell phone because the technology is now outdated? This thought rings true in the cosmetics industry as well. Technology is moving at lightning speed, and we need to keep up with it.
As a makeup artist I study product lines, I’m always looking for the
next best thing- the next great artist tool. For years I’d been
affiliated with Prescriptives Cosmetics line. That line was amazing
because of their color match and product performance. It was a few
years back when that company went out of business, and I was left
foundationless. I ended up going on a frantic search for foundation
because I needed to keep my clients (and myself) looking good. (I am
one of those crazy makeup artists that will go to great lengths to keep
my clients satisfied, and I will only use the best product on them.)
That’s when I turned to the internet and began my search for High
Definition (HD) Cosmetics.

If Eve Pearl had one message to give to Blanche Macdonald’s Makeup Students, it was this:
“Don’t have fear! Fear is the biggest paralyzer. That’s what keeps people back more than anything. I’ve seen people with no fear and no talent succeed. Lookat me! My biggest asset is my ignorance, and not letting my lack of knowledge stop me from pursuing my goals and ideas.”
The five-time Emmy-winner shared her insider knowledge with Makeup Students at Blanche Macdonald’s Atelier Campus, delivering an amazing two-hour presentation where she demonstrated a few of her techniques and the positive attitude that’sput her behind and in front of the camera on hit shows including The View, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and Live with Regis and Kelly.
“Half of what we do is troubleshoot. The other half is staying out of trouble,”she half-joked. “I have bad eyesight and shaky hands. I’m not an artist, but I have good taste and good skills. Speed is important. Simplify your technique.I’m letting you borrow mine.”
