Vancouver Olympics-2010
I'm in beautiful Vancouver for the next few weeks working with NBC's Today show as we cover the games and broadcast from the top of Grouse Mountain. The location is spectacular with breathtaking views. Unfortunatley, we've not had the best weather so far...a bit foggy and rainy. But I look forward to the clear days ahead. In the next few days I will be sharing some photos and videos with you all. Last nights Opening Ceremonies were quite something, however I felt the sadness for the unfortunate loss of Nodar Kumaritashvili in the Luge crash that took his life earlier that morning. As a Georgian myself, I felt a deep sorry for his family and team mates, as I'm sure the rest of the world felt the same. As much as I love what I do, I'm not the biggest fan of traveling and being away from my family and loved ones. I miss you all...so stay in touch. xo, Eve

History and research has shown that when the economy goes into a recession or a depression, the sale of lipstick increases. "The Lipstick Effect"... A term coined after the Great Depression, which saw sales of cosmetics rise in the four years from 1929 to 1933.
As the theory goes, glum consumers continue to spend money on small luxuries during times of economic or emotional stress to buy their spirits, a point underscored in the months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States, which saw lipstick sales double. It seems difficult for women to justify spending their hard earned money on the latest Louis Vuitton handbag or those Christian Louboutin pair of heels. At least they can still splurge on themselves with a small item like cosmetics or lipstick...to look good and hopefully feel better about themselves... Humm...using the luxury of cosmetics to lift our spirits and feel pretty...well, that might have been the case in the Great Depression.... Ladies, times have changed...the current depression puts higher demands on everything...including our cosmetics. Faced with news of increasing layoffs, straining economic pressure and the fact that competition out there is much greater than ever before...in all facets of life...we need to step it up. Let's face it; no one really knows when the next ball will drop. Everyone seems to be competing to get that client, keep that job or end up being one of the hundreds trying to get that one available new job. How do you get noticed, being one from so many...how can the fact that you have years of experience, knowledge and the ability to get the job done, not be overshadowed by the dark under eye circles you have from not sleeping. How can all the years you've put into your field be recognized as an asset when your self conscious about your uneven skin, rosacea or that nasty breakout? It does sound a bit silly, but is it? First impressions DO matter. Your appearance is a good investment even when times are very tough. People, who take care of themselves daily, seem to be able to get ahead of those who don't. Think about the time you spend getting your resume coiffed. The time you spend in finding the appropriate suite, all the hours spent hunting on search engines looking for jobs... Time can give you the professional knowledge. But time can also take away the youthful sparkle of your appearance if you let it. When you look good, you feel confident. That gives you a Competitive Edge and something your colleagues and clients will certainly recognize, appreciate and come to expect. The Lipstick Effect of 2009...cosmetics to help us feel pretty is not enough. Find multi function products that will treat your skin; to make you look good, feel good and that are good for you. Learn how to apply it properly for your field of business...and walk into a room confident that you have done everything to best represent yourself...with a Visual Competitive Edge!
Most of us, at one point or another have wondered to ourselves "How far can my chosen career take me?" I'm sure being a makeup artist might have you believe that this career path would be even more limiting... well my friends, not so. As a matter of fact, being a makeup artist has taken me as far as China... and all over the world.
As I head home to New York City, where I live and so greatly have missed my son, Joseph, my family, friends and colleagues, I realize how truly blessed I am and how incredible it is that I get to travel all over the world... in my chosen career... as a Makeup Artist... while doing what I truly love. As I sit her on my 13 hour flight back home, it really makes me want to share my incredible adventures with you. In the world of blogging, its time that I joined in to share my voice... or print. We've had quite an adventure in this last week while in China. We (Meredith, Deirdre and I) landed in Beijing, where we stayed at the beautiful Peninsula Hotel in the heart of the city. As soon as we arrived after the first 13 hours in the plane, of course we wanted to visit the market area and see what's going on around town. One of our trips out was to Xi-An, where we stayed over while some of the crew went to the earthquake affected area. While in Xi-An our accompanying producer Joy took Dee and I to see the terracotta soldiers... that was amazing. My favorite part though was when we visited Shaolin. We had the opportunity to witness one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen... its called Zen MusicShaoLin Grand Ceremony. With Music and Art Direction by Tan Dun and Dance Design by Huang Doudou. It was truly Zen music that touched your soul... created with the sounds of nature: water, wind, wood illumination and stone. We then visited the famous Shaolin temple, where Kung Fu originated. As a huge fan of Bruce Lee, Jacky Chan and Jet Li, I love martial arts movies... and seeing the place that I've previously only viewed in movies, with the real monks and martial arts in action, this makeup artist was very excited. We were basically on planes just about every day. Our next stop was back to the Beijing Zoo to see the Pandas that were rescued from the earthquake in Chendu province. And we also needed to be ready to do a "live" shot into the Today show, which airs at 7:00 am (that would be 7:00 pm China time). We had a minor complication at the airport... our flight was cancelled. Our producer, Audrey managed to flip 5 of our tickets to another flight and other 2 crew members were going to stay with the checked gear and meet us back at the studio... whenever they caught the flight. I cant tell you the number of places that get turned into makeshift makeup rooms... like, this lovely airport waiting area, for instance... sometimes we draw a lovely crowd of people waiting to get a makeover J. Well, we did manage to catch another flight, land on time and hit a major rain storm back in Beijing. Racing through traffic, black rain and rush hour, our amazing driver managed to get us on the set only 15 minutes after the 7:00 o'clock open... soaking wet. But we made it for the "live" shot and tell the back story of the pandas and show them hanging out at the zoo eating their sugar cane... they were sooo cute. As we are flying back to New York, I'm already anticipating our return trip in August for the Olympics... ![]() ![]() ![]() |
